ACC was co-founded by Bill Bayless, who began his career as a Resident Assistant and turned his dedication to student success into the company he runs today. Twenty-five members of ACC’s senior corporate staff began their careers as Resident Assistants, and most of the management staff first joined ACC as students working at ACC communities.

By blending our grassroots expertise with a fierce commitment to quality, we bring unparalleled service and value to students, parents and universities, while consistently outperforming our peers in the student housing industry.

Throughout their collective careers, our senior staff has been involved in the development, acquisition or management of more than 350 student housing communities consisting of more than 222,000 beds.

Meet the leadership of ACC.

William C. Bayless, JR


William C. Bayless, Jr., our chief executive officer, is a co-founder of American Campus and serves on our board of directors. Prior to assuming the role of CEO in 2003 he served as our chief operating officer, where he directed all of the company’s business segments. From 1993 until July 1995, he served as our vice president of development.

Prior to the formation of ACC, he served as the director of operations for Century Development’s student housing division and as the director of marketing for the student housing division of Cardinal Industries. His student housing career began in 1984 with Allen & O’Hara, where he held the positions of Resident Assistant, Resident Manager and Area Marketing Coordinator.

We truly care about students by also making a commitment to creating a sustainable future. That’s why we integrate sustainable features into the communities we develop, in everything from design to materials selection. We lead by example, promoting green living to our residents and employees, continually evaluating and refining sustainability standards in our existing communities, and keeping an eye toward sustainability when conceiving new developments. In fact, many of ACC’s developed communities are LEED® certified, with 13 communities receiving LEED Gold or Silver certifications.
